Land of Milk and Honey

The second painting in the Nest Series, Land of Milk and Honey, reflects the comfort of home—or wherever home has felt to you. Its title comes from the old expression describing the Promised Land, a biblical phrase that, for me, represents my family's hopes and dreams when they immigrated from Cuba.

The milk bottle rests safely inside the nest, tucked among moss and treasured found objects. It represents the promise of a new life my family sought when they came to America, while also recalling an object that would have been a familiar part of everyday life in the 1950s. The Dubble Bubble gum is another childhood memory. Every piece came wrapped with a tiny comic strip, making it feel like a treat wrapped inside another treat. It was always a little disappointing that the flavor disappeared almost as quickly as it took to read the comic.
